Dritz Self Cover Buttons
Roadtest! I had such fun with this one. These Self Cover Buttons are just the easiest thing ever.

Available in two sizes, this is one of the quickest projects I have done this year. I don’t know why but I always thought it would be fiddly and time consuming to cover your own buttons. Guess what – it’s not.

First I made myself a new cushion cover using the zipper out of the old cover and some natural linen.

Next, I found a fabric I liked for the button cover. This one is from Denyse Schmidt’s new range, Hope Valley. I made sure I had something that would feature the flower nicely on the button.

Next, I cut out the template for the fabric from the back of the packet….

and cut out the fabric in a circle from the template.

Now comes the only little tricky bit. Start stretching the fabric over the little teeth on the back of the button cover. I attached two opposite sides first, and then started working my way around. You need to use your fingernail or the end of a pencil to push the fabric onto the teeth.

Once all the fabric is on the teeth, go back and stretch out any little creases so that the fabric sits neatly along the edges without any puckers. (pic 7)

Put the little back piece onto the button and give it a good sharp tap in place. If the fabric is heavy is says on the packet to use a cotton reel to help you, but I found it just clicked right in.

And here it is!

Next I threaded a needle with a sharp point and a large eye with two strands of Perle cotton.

I threaded the length through the centre of the cushion and out the other side, through the button loop and back to the other side. Then I pulled the thread tight and tied a triple knot at the back of the cushion. I do realise that to take the cover off and wash the cushion I will have to clip the thread and take the button off, but as it took all of about 30 seconds to attach I don’t think that’s a huge issue!

And here’s your finished cushion, as cute as a you know what. This whole project, including making the cushion cover, took me 25 minutes.
I can think of a million things to use these buttons for. Bags, badges, cushions, hairclips – what a fun roadtest! Now I think I’ll go and make another cushion in reverse fabrics……
Here’s where you can get them! Look to the right!
