The Story of Granny

I came across the story of Granny on her granddaughter, Valerie’s, blog a few weeks ago. I was so taken with this 96 year old quilting whirlwind, I just had to share her story with all of you.

Granny doesn’t remember when she first started sewing. She says, just as long as she remembers. She thinks maybe her Mom taught her.

According to Valerie, Granny is as smart as a tack for her 96 years. She maybe a little hard of hearing, and sometimes has trouble remembering things that happened long ago, but she quilts like nobody’s business.

Every Monday through Thursday, Granny quilts. Friday is wash day, and by 9am she already has her wash done and is making apple butter. She loves to quilt so much, she can hardly stand it when her family or other company stops by and keeps her from her sewing machine. Sometimes she has a day where she says she will stop quilting, but the family knows she is just having a tired moment and that the very next week she will be back at the machine, quilting again. She says it’s just so much fun.

Her granddaughter says, “My dad asked her to lay down and rest one day while I was there. She said she couldn’t, because she had to quilt. He told her that it was not a job and she could do anything she wanted to. She said, if it is Monday through Thursday, she has to sew. She acted like he was crazy.”

Recently, Granny’s sewing machine broke down and she was devastated. When she found it could not be fixed, she was so sad. However, although she doesn’t accept change well, she has broken the new machine in and has made three quilts and is flying along again.

Granny has made literally hundreds of quilts over the years, and Valerie has recently been running a competition to win one of Granny’s quilts on her blog  . She has also been selling the quilts Granny makes, you can see them all in her blog sidebar .

October 24 was Granny’s birthday – I am so sorry I have this post up late! What I really wanted to say is

from all the way Down Under, and from all the Sewn readers around the world. We think you’re a quilting wonder, keep it up!
